In a significant move to address the critical time window for stroke treatment, the Punjab government on Tuesday gave in-principle approval to establish specialized stroke management centers in every district, aimed at providing immediate and localized medical care to patients.
The comprehensive plan includes the deployment of neurologists and pediatric neurologists in all District Headquarter Hospitals (DHQs). To enhance local expertise, directives have also been issued to provide a designated doctor and nurse from each district with three months of intensive stroke management training.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered the launch of a telemedicine project to facilitate immediate medical consultation for stroke patients. This initiative will allow doctors in district hospitals to connect with specialists and consultants via phone, ensuring the availability of expert guidance for timely treatment decisions.
To support these new facilities, the Chief Minister has directed authorities to initiate a special training program for nurses. Additionally, measures will be taken to provide stroke management training to emergency rescuers, enhancing their ability to assist patients during the critical initial phase.
The initiative has also been extended to pediatric care, with a stroke management center to be established in every children’s hospital. This move aims to eliminate the need for patients and their families to travel to major cities for specialized treatment.
Acknowledging the urgency of the matter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif stressed the importance of prompt medical intervention. Emphasizing her personal commitment to the project’s success, she stated, “The significance of the ‘golden hours’ for stroke treatment is well-established. I will personally lead the awareness campaign.”
