Punjab Launches School-Level Skill Program to Benefit 1.4 Million Students

LAHORE: A new skill-based training program aimed at equipping 1.4 million students with practical skills is set to be introduced at schools across Punjab under the guidance of the Chief Minister. The initiative, targeting students from grade 9, is designed to address the high dropout rate post-matriculation and prepare students for the workforce with necessary skills.

According to Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Secretary of Education Muddassir Riaz Malik announced the program during a meeting at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The meeting was attended by LCCI President Faheem ur Rehman Saigol, Senior Vice President Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh, and other key members. LCCI President Saigol emphasized the importance of transitioning to a skill-based education system, advocating for stronger ties between industry and academia to meet market demands.

The program will be implemented in 9,141 schools across Punjab, with students participating in three classes per week to complete approximately 120 hours of training over two years. Key areas of training include IT, Artificial Intelligence, healthcare, cooking, electrical work, and plumbing. Secretary Malik highlighted the necessity of industry involvement to ensure the program's success, noting that similar models have been successful in countries like India and China.

Additional components of the program include establishing a comprehensive database to monitor student progress and aligning training with district-level industry needs. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce unemployment and empower the youth by providing them with essential skills. The meeting concluded with a consensus on the potential of the program to strengthen the national economy through effective implementation and active industry participation.
