Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain has stressed the importance of streamlining taxation and enacting systemic reforms within the livestock sector.
According to a report today, the proposed measures aim to bolster support for farmers and ensure product affordability across the nation, with a particular focus on the feasibility of reducing General Sales Tax (GST) on milk.
During a pre-budget consultation held in Islamabad, the dignitary highlighted that the livestock industry contributes approximately sixty per cent to the overall agriculture sector. He further emphasised its considerable capacity for both domestic nutritional provision and international exports.
According to the Minister, easing the existing tax policies could significantly contribute to an increase in both production volumes and government revenue.
Among the specific proposals currently under consideration are pilot projects designed for milk pasteurisation and the establishment of dedicated “safe milk cities.” These initiatives are being reviewed in conjunction with the possibility of reducing GST on dairy products.
Rana Tanveer Hussain concluded by stating that enhancing milk quality and formalising the sector would be primary objectives for future governmental efforts.
