Former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and former Ambassador of Pakistan, Sardar Masood Khan, has termed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. and Iran as a significant step towards peace. However, this development faces obstacles in the form of complex negotiations and the potential re-emergence of regional tensions.
In a statement today, the former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir attributed the recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump about possible military action primarily to domestic political gain, not as a sign of failed diplomacy. He claimed that the fundamental agreement remains intact, and formal signing is expected as planned.
Khan pointed out that both Washington and Tehran understand the political pressure and are unlikely to allow public statements to derail the diplomatic dialogue ongoing for months. The focus now is on developing a comprehensive framework aimed at Iran’s nuclear ambitions, easing sanctions, and confidence-building measures to ensure long-term peace.
The upcoming 60-day negotiation round is considered crucial. Khan expressed hope that with sustained political commitment, the process could be completed ahead of schedule. He emphasized that negotiators are not starting anew but advancing a strong understanding.
Khan also highlighted the economic prospects associated with the agreement, stating that the revival of energy exports and trade can enhance regional interdependence, thereby reducing the risks of conflicts. He suggested that the involvement of Gulf countries and private investors could accelerate Iran’s economic recovery and integration.
Referring to Israel’s potential reaction, Khan warned that some quarters might attempt to thwart the diplomatic efforts. However, he was confident that ongoing diplomatic efforts by the U.S. and its regional allies would manage tensions and maintain negotiation momentum.
