Three minor girls were killed after a school boundary wall collapsed in Sindh’s Umerkot district on Tuesday, prompting provincial authorities to order an immediate investigation into the incident, officials said.
According to police, the girls were walking alongside the school wall while returning from a nearby madrasa when the structure suddenly gave way, burying them beneath the debris.
Rescue personnel and police rushed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported and recovered the victims before shifting their bodies to Civil Hospital Umerkot. Panic gripped the area soon after the incident.
The deceased were identified as 13-year-old Sughra, three-year-old Raiba and Kaneezah.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed profound grief over the deaths and took immediate notice of the incident. He directed the Education Department to submit an urgent report and ordered a transparent and impartial investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and fix responsibility for any negligence.
The tragedy has once again underscored the importance of ensuring the structural integrity of school buildings across the Sindh province. Experts say similar incidents can be avoided through regular engineering inspections of educational institutions, timely maintenance and repair of aging infrastructure, immediate removal or reinforcement of unsafe structures, strict enforcement of construction and safety standards, adequate budget allocations for school maintenance, and clear accountability for officials responsible for oversight.
They also stress that emergency preparedness plans and periodic safety audits should become mandatory to better protect students and pedestrians from preventable accidents.
