The burden of electricity companies’ failures should not be accepted by the public and industries: BMPP

The business community has strongly opposed the ongoing financial burden on the public and industries due to the failures of electricity companies. Businessmen Panel Progressive (BMPP) Secretary General Khurram Ijaz has demanded the government to abolish the debt service surcharge, which is unjustly affecting consumers.

In a statement today, Ijaz criticized the persistent issue of circular debt, stating that instead of addressing the root cause of the problem, authorities have merely concealed it by acquiring additional loans. In his opinion, this strategy continues to exploit electricity consumers who are already bearing the burden of years of mismanagement and ineffective policies.

Consumers have been continuously facing the consequences of delayed reforms in the power sector, and the financial weight of these failures has been unfairly shifted to domestic and industrial consumers. Ijaz specifically demanded an urgent review of the 3.23 rupees per unit debt service surcharge, which he considers an unreasonable burden on consumers.

This action appeal by the business sector highlights the urgent need for the government to address these systemic issues and reduce the unfair cost burden on the citizens and businesses of Pakistan.
