Sindh Proposes Up to 7.5% Increase in Minimum Wages

The Sindh Minimum Wages Board, Government of Sindh, today issued the proposed minimum monthly wage rates for semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled workers employed in 60 different industries across the province through an official gazette. According to the notification, an increase of up to 7.5% in the existing minimum wages has been proposed.

Under the proposed revised minimum monthly wage structure, the salary of a semi-skilled worker has been proposed at PKR 44,484, that of a skilled worker at PKR 53,350, and the minimum monthly wage of a highly skilled worker at PKR 55,626. According to the Sindh Minimum Wages Board, the proposed rates have been determined after taking into account inflation, prevailing economic conditions, productivity, and tripartite consultations.

Objections and suggestions regarding the notification have been invited from the public, industrialists, employers’ organisations, and labour representatives within 14 days. Following the review of the feedback received, the final notification will be issued.

The notification further clarifies that the proposed minimum wages will apply to 60 industries across Sindh. It states that no employer will be permitted to pay any worker less than the prescribed minimum wage. It also makes it mandatory for employers to pay equal minimum wages to male and female workers performing work of an identical nature.
