Administrator seeks university status for Karachi Medical and Dental College

KARACHI: Administrator Karachi Laeeq Ahmed on Monday directed his sub ordinates to take measures to give university status to Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC).

 

“Daily OPD should be done in the dental hospital and a private wing of the dental hospital be also set up to treat those who can afford it as it would help to increase revenue. The backlog of salaries of teachers and officers of grades 17 to 20 should be abolished. An amount of Rs 10 million per month should be added to the outgoing amount so that this problem can be solved,” the administrator expressed these views while presiding over a meeting to review the academic and administrative affairs of KMDC.

 

Ahmed said that 250 MBBS and 100 BDS students are studying in KMDC, most of whom belong to the poor and middle class. “This college is a ray of hope for promising and talented students of poor and middle class as educational expenses are low and the quality of education is high,” he added.

 

The administrator said that the professors and teachers of the college should devote their best talents to the students as the field of medicine is very important. Doctors play a role in protecting the health of the people and saving their lives.

 

Ahmed said that it is important to secure the future of the children and for that any shortcomings in the medical and dental faculty of KMDC should be rectified and efforts be made to ensure that the quality of this faculty is up to the national standard.

 

He said that KMDC earns Rs120 million in the head of fee while its annual income is about Rs. 4 million from OPD which is very meager amount to run a medical college. “KMC will continue to do its utmost to meet the needs of this college and to improve the quality of KMDC, its laboratories, library and dental sector will be upgraded and adapted to modern requirements,” he added.

 

He said that medical students should have all the facilities available in a good and quality medical college. He directed the finance department to pay the salaries of KMDC grade seventeen and above teachers. Payment issues should be resolved as soon as possible so that professors and teachers can perform their duties with full attention, diligence and dedication.

 

The administrator said that this is the only medical and dental college established under any local body in the country which has got the honor of joining the ranks of the best medical colleges of the country in a very short span of time. He said that it is very important to improve financial management in order to run any organization well, while only through systematic and strict discipline can one get full benefit from the organization.
