New Delhi, June 01, 2023 (PPI-OT): Even in the presence of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah in volatile Manipur state, several people were injured and houses were burnt in the incidents of arson and firing in Bishnupur-Churachandpur districts, putting a question mark on the Home Minister’s efforts to end the violence that has now been continuing for nearly a month. The latest incident took place near Tangjeng village along the Bishnupur-Churachandpur districts, the other day.
“Houses were set on fire in villages under Thouban Dam police station in Imphal East district and in the Island subdivision of Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district on Tuesday night,” wrote Deccan Herald. Amit Shah visited Moreh and Kangpokpi districts on Wednesday morning, where he met leaders of the oppressed Christian tribe Kuki and Hindu tribe Meitei. The home minister, who has been in Manipur since Monday, also met the Army and other security agencies in Moreh.
Since the violence against the Christian members of Kuki tribe broke out on May 3, at least 75 persons have died, hundreds injured and nearly 50,000 displaced, mostly the minority Christian members. According to Deccan Herald, the Manipur government extended the internet ban – both mobile and broadband – until June 5. The state’s chief minister N. Biren Singh urged people to return weapons “which were snatched during the riot from police battalions and police stations, both in the Valley and in the Hills”. More than 1,000 weapons were snatched.
