Around 27 women die daily in Pakistan due to childbirth complications: Health experts

Health experts at a medical seminar in Larkana on Thursday revealed with grave statistics that around 27 women lose their lives daily in Pakistan due to childbirth complications, a crisis largely attributed to the presence of untrained midwives, especially in rural areas.

The revelation was the focal point of a scientific seminar held at Chandka Medical College (CMC) under the auspices of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), titled “Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) – How to Save the First Caesarean”.

During the scholarly lectures, renowned expert Dr. Martin Wiren-Blom from Sweden and eminent gynecologist Professor Sher Shah Syed shed light on the issue in detail, stating that out of every 1000 pregnant women in the country, 15 die from treatable causes.

The experts emphasized that continuous prenatal check-ups, diligent monitoring of blood pressure, sugar, hemoglobin, and weight, and making evidence-based decisions during childbirth can significantly increase the chances of a normal and safe delivery.

To combat the high female mortality rate, the speakers advocated for strengthening labor room management in subordinate hospitals, providing modern training to all staff, and raising awareness about safe motherhood practices among families.

Addressing the gathering, SMBBMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nusrat Shah expressed her support for such scholarly discussions to develop better strategies for maternal and child health. She said, “Unless we discuss the problems, we cannot find their solutions.”

The seminar, attended by a large number of gynecology experts, faculty, paramedical staff, and students, formally began with a welcome address by CMC Principal Professor Dr. Shahid Hussain Soomro and concluded with a vote of thanks by Vice-Principal Dr. Fauzia Chandio, after which cultural gifts were presented to the guests.
