Aseefa Bhutto inaugurates state-of-the-art free cardiac hospital in Shaheed Benazirabad

First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari inaugurated a new 55-bed cardiac hospital on Saturday, expanding access to advanced, no-cost cardiovascular treatment for the population of Central Sindh. The facility is the latest addition to what is described as the world”s largest free cardiac healthcare network.

The newly opened Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (SICVD) Shaheed Benazirabad is a purpose-built institution offering round-the-clock cardiac emergency services, primary angioplasty, and paediatric cardiac care, all provided without charge to patients. Plans are also in motion to introduce stroke intervention services in the near future.

During the inauguration, the First Lady noted that such institutions provide essential, timely, and dignified treatment for patients, particularly those from underserved and marginalised communities.

The centre, which was first established on 12 April 2018, has been relocated from its previous site at Peoples Medical University Hospital due to space limitations. The move to the new, larger building significantly increases its capacity to serve the region.

Prof Jawaid Akbar Sial, the Executive Director of SICVD, stated that the new facility reaffirms a commitment to delivering advanced and completely free cardiovascular care directly to communities. He highlighted that the SICVD network now comprises 10 full-fledged cardiac hospitals and an extensive network of Chest Pain Units across the province.

Sindh Minister for Health, Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, affirmed the provincial government”s dedication to strengthening public healthcare infrastructure. She identified the new hospital as a major development aimed at reducing health disparities and ensuring universal access to quality cardiovascular services.

The project also benefited from significant private contributions. The First Lady acknowledged the philanthropic support of Chaudhry Muhammad Zafar Arain and Mr. Azeem Mughal, who donated the hospital building and have pledged further support for an upcoming surgical tower.

The ceremony was attended by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, along with senior government officials, healthcare professionals, and representatives from the SICVD network.
