Auto Sales Surge Expected in January, Reaching Highest Levels Since 2022

Karachi: Auto sales in Pakistan are anticipated to reach their highest levels since mid-2022, with projections indicating a significant increase in January. This surge is expected to be driven by a cumulative growth of 43% year-on-year, totaling approximately 19,700 units sold, according to industry forecasts.

According to JS Global, the three major players in the auto sector, Indus Motor Company Ltd (INDU), Honda Atlas Cars Ltd (HCAR), and Pak Suzuki Motor Company Ltd, are poised for substantial monthly growth. The sector is projected to see an 82% increase in sales compared to the previous month, attributed largely to the 'January effect,' where consumers delay purchases in December to acquire new year models. Over the first seven months of the fiscal year 2026, overall volumes have expanded by 42% year-on-year, with notable recoveries led by HCAR and INDU, which posted growth rates of 68% and 61%, respectively.

The outlook for the auto industry remains cautiously optimistic, supported by improving consumer confidence, macroeconomic stability, and easing financing rates. However, the sector faces potential challenges in the longer term, as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) continues to advocate for a gradual reduction in weighted average tariffs on imported cars. This move could potentially reduce the protection currently afforded to the local industry and increase exposure to foreign competition.
