Business and Finance – OGDC Announces New Hydrocarbon Discovery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The state-owned Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) on Friday reported a new oil and gas find at an exploratory well in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a development anticipated to bolster the nation”s energy reserves.

The discovery was made at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well, situated within the Nashpa Exploration Licence. According to a company statement, a test conducted in the Lumshiwal Formation yielded a daily output of 225 barrels of oil and 1.01 million standard cubic feet of gas.

The flow was recorded through a 32/64-inch choke, with a wellhead flowing pressure registered at 190 pounds per square inch (psig). This latest test, designated Cased Hole Drill Stem Test (CHDST-04), was performed in the Hangu and Lumshiwal formations.

The Baragzai X-01 (Slant) prospect was spudded on 30 December 2024, with the objective of evaluating the hydrocarbon potential of several formations. The well was drilled to a total depth of 5,170 metres, reaching the Kingriali Formation.

This marks the fourth successful test at the well. Based on wireline log interpretations, three prior discoveries of oil and gas were made in the Kingriali, Datta, and the combined Samana Suk and Shinawari formations, confirming the block”s commercial potential.

OGDC is the operator of the Nashpa block, holding a 65 per cent working interest. Its joint venture partners include Pakistan Petroleum Limited, with a 30 per cent stake, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited, which possesses a 5 per cent carried interest.

The firm noted that the find will contribute to enhancing Pakistan’s indigenous hydrocarbon production, adding to the reserve base of the joint venture and helping to reduce the country’s energy supply and demand gap.
