Couple shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI:A couple was shot dead in Shah Latif town area of the metropolis on Tuesday night.

According to police, Muhammad Ibrar, aged 27 and Shahaba, 30, had run away from their houses and married in secret around a six month ago. They came from Bannu to Karachi and reside in Shah Latif town‘s Sector-20.

Unknown assailants enter their house and shot the couple, police added. Police further said Muhammad Abrar was shot six times and Shabana five times.

The police believe it was an honour killing. The suspects came on a motorcycle and fled on the same vehicle.

The bodies were shifted to Jinnah postgraduate Medical Center for medico-legal formalities.

Awan stresses need to promote research in law

KARACHI:Secretary Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) Dr Muhammad Rahim Awan has stressed the need for inculcating and promoting trends of research and exploration amongst the law students to achieve the cherished goal of high standards in law pedagogy.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a certificates distribution ceremony at Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto University of Law (SZABUL). Justice Helpline had organized the First National Law Students Conference and Second National Women Law Conference in Karachi in collaboration with SZABUL and the law students.

Dr Rahim suggested the law university and the law colleges of the country to hold competitions amongst the meritorious students involved in law research and award prizes to the winners. He said there was a dire need to groom and train experts in international arbitration laws as Pakistan hada zero representation in the International Bar Council.

Earlier, SZABUL VC Justice Zia Perwez while delivering presidential address said an overwhelming majority of Pakistani students hailed from lower-middle and higher-middle classes who could not afford expenditures of earning a foreign university degree.

He said a graduation degree from a UK varsity cost more than £100,000. On the other hand, the degrees earned through Distant Learning Programmes of different foreign universities were not recognized by Pakistan Bar Council.

SZABUL had entered academic partnership agreement with University of Northampton (UoN) for collaboration in higher education he added under the programme, likely to be launched by end of current year, Pakistani students would get a regular foreign degree at nominal fee of £2300.

Chairman Justice Helpline Nadeem Shaikh Advocate and SZABUL’s VC Justice Zia Perwez, Registrar Syed Sharaf Ali Shah, Director Finance Amir Bashir and Professor GN Qureshi also spoke on the occasion.

South Korea announces cash aid for HIV control

KARACHI:Government of the Republic of Korea has decided to extend humanitarian assistance of USD 100,000 in cash through the World Health Organization (WHO) to help respond to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Outbreak in Larkana district, Sindh province of the Pakistan.

The HIV spread was mainly in Larkana district and as of 13 July 2019, 935 people have been confirmed with the virus [including 760 children aged under 15 (82%)].

Dr Palitha Mahipala, a WHO Representative in Pakistan, had called on Mr. Kwak Sung-kyu, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Islamabad on 10 July in order to garnering support for WHO project to respond to unprecedented HIV outbreak in Larkana district. The Korean Embassy played a constructive role in Seoul’s making the decision to support the noble cause of the WHO project, sympathizing with the grave concern that HIV is spreading rapidly and the majority of the victims are children.

Despite South Korea’s commitment, there remains a significant funding gap for the WHO project, as it requires USD 4.5 million for the next two years for preventing the spread of transmission of HIV infection in Pakistan and reducing the suffering among the HIV infected population, especially children.

Informing Dr Mahipala of South Korea’s decision for support on 18 July, Ambassador Kwak mentioned “I expect that other governments and international NGOs will join South Korea in supporting WHO’s efforts in responding to the HIV outbreak in Pakistan.”

“WHO highly appreciates the valuable support made by the Government of the Republic of Korea enabling WHO to scale up its response to the HIV affected population in Larkana district”, expressed Dr Palitha in a bilateral meeting on 18 July with Ambassador Kwak.

SHCC and PNRA discuss issues of Radiology Centres

KARACHI:Sindh Health Care Commission (SHCC) organized a meeting with a delegation of Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) to discuss issues regarding radiology centres.

Director PNRA Khalid Hussain led the team and discussed issues regarding quality assurance and quality control of equipment in diagnostic radiology procedures being practiced in Sindh.

The SHCC team apprised issues of use of sub-standard X-ray machines and instruments, radiation effects and its awareness and mal-practices that exists in current healthcare system.

They emphasized the need of proper verification of documents and inspection before issuance of license by PNRA to practitioners. SHCC offered its services to PNRA for inspecting relevant sites for licensing.

PNRA team said that they will work with SHCC team to regularize and improve the current procedures. To elucidate their role PNRA team will participate in trainings in coordination with SHCC team.

It was decided in the meeting that SHCC and PNRA will make collaborative efforts to improve the healthcare system.

Moreover, Directorate of Complaint SHCC has received four complaints in this week and one complaint was resolved in this week. Till date, total 82 complaint are received out of which 47 complaints are disposed of, 30 complaints are under process while 5 are sub-judice.

The SHCC team met with Director Solid Waste Management regarding improper waste disposal of different HCEs’. It was suggested to Director Waste Management to arrange designated person with SHCC inspection team to assess waste disposal procedures employed by HCEs’ and to take preventive actions and penalties in case of non-compliance.

The Directorate of Licensing and Accreditation has received 311 new applications for registration in this week and certificates were issued to 150 HCEs’ in this week bringing total number of registration certificates issued to 5,443.Directorate of Licensing and Accreditation,

The SHCC issued 1,041 warning to unregistered HCEs’ after 30th June 2019. In this week 504 warning were issued and non-compliance will result in closing down/sealing of the HCEs’. The team also conducted inspection of National Medical Center (NMC).

The Directorate of Anti-Quackery has sealed 120 clinics in this week in Karachi, Sanghar and Badin. Till date Total 1,647 Healthcare Establishments (HCEs’) were sealed in Sindh.

Youth killed in armed attack in Shah Faisal Colony

KARACHI:A youth was killed in an armed attack in Shah Faisal Colony area of the city in the wee hours of Thursday.

According to rescue sources, unidentified armed men riding a motorbike opened fire on a 22-year-old youth, Waqas in Shah Faisal Colony Gate No-3. As a result, he suffered severe bullet injuries and died on the spot.

The attacker fled the scene after killing the man; however police started investigation into matter. The body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center for medico-legal formalities.

Sports: Football: National Football Challenge Cup kicks off today in Peshawar

Karachi:The 28th edition of National Football Challenge Cup kicks off today (Friday) with the opening match to be played between Pakistan Air Force and Asia Ghee Mills.

A total of 16 teams will vie for top honors in the tournament. Provincial Minister for Health and Information Shaukat Ali Yousufzai will be the chief guest during the opening ceremony.

The tournament matches will be played at Tehmas Khan Stadium and Qayyum Football Stadium in Peshawar. The tournament offers a prize purse of Rs 1.2 million.

The teams participating in the tournament are Khan Research Laboratories, Pakistan Air Force, Sui Southern Gas Company, Army, WAPDA, National Bank of Pakistan, Navy, Civil Aviation Authority, Karachi Port Trust, Railway, Police, Karachi United, Pakistan Television, Asia Ghee Mills, PFF Tigers and Masha Club.

The 16 teams are divided into four groups. Top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals.

Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has appointed Technical Study Group (TSG), who will select 40 top performers during the tournament, which will serve as the preliminary squad ahead of the SAFF tournament.

PFF selectors picked top performing players from National Inter City Football Championship 2019, which was held earlier this year. The PFF Tigers team featuring in the upcoming National Challenge Cup consists of those players.

The National Challenge Cup, which is supposed to be an annual event of the PFF, has been held intermittently 27 times in the last 40 years since 1979.

KRL is the most successful side with six titles. Meanwhile, Pakistan Air Force will be seen defending title during this upcoming edition.

Khan, Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Zhob, Kalat, Mardan divisions. Hot and humid weather is expected elsewhere in the country.
