Teenager electrocuted in North Karachi

KARACHI:A teenage boy was electrocuted in a factory in North Karachi area of the metropolis on Thursday.

According to rescue sources, an 18-year-old boy, Ameer Bux suffered severe electric shocks while switching on the water pump in a factory in Shafiq Morr. As a result, he died on the spot.

The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

SHC dispose of three pleas of missing persons as it gets clues

KARACHI:Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday dispose of three pleas of missing persons as the court was informed by the police about three missing persons’ whereabouts.

A two-member bench of the SHC, headed by Justice Naimtullah Phulputo, heard three pleas seeking recovery of missing persons. The police submitted the report before the bench which said those three missing person are, Oan, a bank employer, who appeared before bench after he returned home; Ghulam Ali, who’s arrest was shown by the police and another missing man, Saeed Ahmed, who was killed in Mochko area, but the police informed the court that culprits had been arrested. Three of missing men were clueless since past several months.

The bench remarked: “We tried our best on daily basis that missing citizens return their home.” However, the bench sought a report from Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh and Director General Rangers on other pleas of missing persons until 22 August.

Earlier, the police had submitted reports pertaining to the recovery of 20 missing person. The families of missing persons have been following the proceedings for many years as a result, a number of missing persons have recovered.

Establishment of Institute of Sindh Studies okayed

KARACHI:Sindh Madressatul Islam University’s (SMIU) Syndicate Thursday approved establishment of Institute of Sindh Studies, which will carry out research on various aspects of Sindh, including Sindhi language, history, culture, archeology, agriculture, irrigation, demography, natural resources and technological developments etc.

The approval was made in its 20th meeting held today at the Conference Room on the recommendation of the Academic Council. The Syndicate also approved the proposal of the Academic Council to initiate working in consultation with the Higher Education Commission for the award of research degrees like MS and PhD in the above stated areas. The Syndicate approved approaching federal as well as Sindh government for appropriate budgetary allocations for the institution. It further approved the opening of five new departments during the next three years namely Department of Software Engineering, Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management, Department of Alternate Energy, Department of Social Development, Department of English. In this regard, the Syndicate authorized the Vice Chancellor to open these departments gradually by meeting the criteria and codal formalities set by the HEC.

The syndicate also approved the initiation of PhD programs in Management Sciences, Media Studies and Education after obtaining required permission from the HEC. The Syndicate highly appreciated SMIU’s innovative program aimed at learning through exposure like students National Leadership Program, Exploring Sindh Educational Trip as well as International Ambassador Program. The Syndicate highly praised the services rendered by Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh for the development of the institution.

The meeting was chaired by Vice Chancellor SMIU Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh and was attended by former Federal Ombudsman Salman Farooqi, former Chief Justice of Federal Shariat Court Justice (R) Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan, former Election Commissioner Justice (R) Roshan Ali Essani, former Chairman Universities Grants Commission and former Vice Chancellor Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam Dr AQ Mughal, former Dean of the Faculty in Karachi University Prof Dr Abdul Rasheed and other members.

One killed, two injured as van overturns

KARACHI:A man was killed and two others sustained injuries when a Hyundai Shehzore vehicle overturned near Karachi’s Kati Pahari area on Wednesday.

According to rescue sources, a fast-moving Hyundai Shehzore loaded with vegetables overturned near Kati Pahari on Northern Bypass. As a result, a 25-year-old man, Amanullah suffered severe injuries and died on the spot, while two others Rafiq, aged 34 and Karim Bux, 30 sustained injuries.

The body and injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi.

Man electrocuted in DHA

KARACHI:A man was electrocuted in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on Wednesday.

According to rescue sources, a 30-year-old man, Ajaz, received electric shocks in DHA Phase-5. As a result, he died on the spot.

The body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center for medico-legal formalities.

1158 criminals, including 109 Pos, nabbed in a week

KARACHI:Sindh police on Wednesday claimed to have apprehended 1158 criminals, including 300 absconders, 109 proclaimed offenders and 749 others, during week-long actions across the Sindh province.

According to a spokesman for Sindh police, during crackdowns on outlaws, Karachi police arrested 109 absconders, one proclaimed offender and 417 other criminals.

Hyderabad police during the raids arrested 70 absconders, 11 proclaimed offenders and 229 other suspects. Sukkur police apprehended two proclaimed offenders and 59 other criminals.

Larkana police claimed to have detained 106 absconders, 91 proclaimed offenders and 32 other suspects. Shaheed Benazirabad police arrested 19 absconders, four proclaimed offenders and 23 others outlaws. Mirpurkhas police nabbed four absconders and 14 other suspects.

IGP Sindh directed DIGs and SSPs to make special efforts for the arrest of wanted criminals throughout the province.

Top level meeting vow to revive KCR

KARACHI:Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani today held a meeting at his office here to review the progress of operation against illegal encroachments in connection with restoration of Karachi Circular Railway track as per SC directions.

The commissioner Karachi appreciated the efforts of all concerned who took coordinated and comprehensive strategy to clear the track within 50/50 feet of KCR. He underlined the need to continue anti-encroachment drive till the targets are achieved.

The commissioner further said: “We continue to work and clear the track with same momentum to revive KCR.” He said that before submitting the comprehensive and convincing report to SC, ‘we would ask the PR to run trial train on the track so that we would see the future aspects and impact on ground realities’.

The meeting was told that all ACs and other authorities will make sure to the strategy evolved for the task and resolve the same as per law under SC directions.

DIG Operation PR Azhar Rasheed Khan said that the Railway Police with the support of DCs etc were working as per strategy devised for revival of KCR under SC directions.

Municipal Commissioner KMC Dr Saifur Rehman appreciated the efforts by all respective teams and said that as per SC direction, they all here would ensure all legalities and modalities. DC East and West also briefed about daily progress of the operation launched since May 15 and on wards will ensure all track clear and would draft a legal notice of 45 days issued to unauthorized persons and human settlements as per SC direction and will follow as per law and rules to clear the track of KCR as per plan and mechanism .

ADC Central was informed that a nine-day operation plan will be launched from tomorrow in the district as per strategy to bulldoze the human settlements without any resistances.

The commissioner Karachi said that before submitting the comprehensive and convincing report to SC, On June 9, concrete steps would be taken to revive KCR with collective and coordinated efforts by all concerned through proper strategy and mechanism under set targets.
