Parliament reiterates moral, diplomatic, political support to Kashmir cause

Islamabad, February 08, 2023 (PPI-OT):The joint sitting of the Parliament has expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir for their right to self-determination and reiterated Pakistan’s unstinting moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmir Cause. It adopted a unanimous resolution moved by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Javed Abbasi, expressing solidarity with the oppressed Kashmiri people in their just struggle for realization of their right to self-determination.

This Joint Session recalled that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains one of the oldest unresolved international disputes on the United Nations’ agenda, mindful of numerous United Nations Security Council Resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute adopted since 1948.

The House paid rich tribute to the valor, courage and sacrifices of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. It appreciated the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir for their steadfast political support to their Kashmiri brothers and sisters living across the Line of Control.

Rejecting India’s unilateral and illegal actions since 5th August, 2019, it expressed grave concern over attempts to introduce demographic changes in IIOJK, inter-alia, through issuance of domicile certificates to outsiders, allowing purchase of land by non-Kashmiris, addition of temporary residents to the voters’ lists and fresh delimitation of electoral constituencies.

The resolution emphasized that any political process, held under foreign occupation, cannot be a substitute to the exercise of the right to self-determination by the people of the Jammu and Kashmir as provided in the relevant UNSC Resolutions;

The Parliament also expressed serious concern at the presence of over 900,000 Indian forces that has turned the IIOJK into one of the most militarized regions of the world. It condemned the ongoing human rights violations in IIOJK, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, the so-called ‘cordon- and-search’ operations, destruction and confiscation of properties, and torture.

Besides, the House expressed serious apprehensions at the continued illegal detention and incarceration of Kashmiri political leaders and activists. It deplored the impunity with which the Indian forces continue their egregious human rights violations in IIOJK, under draconian laws that defy the norms of justice. It also reprimanded the belligerent statements of the Indian political leaders and military officers regarding Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, threatening regional peace and stability.

The Joint Session reaffirmed the unshakeable resolve of the Pakistani nation to thwart any Indian aggression. It urged India to allow an independent investigation into the human rights violations in IIOJK as recommended by the Reports of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of June 2018 and July 2019.

The resolution demanded that India must rescind its illegal and unilateral actions of 5th August, 2019 and subsequent measures and earnestly implement the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions to enable Kashmiri people to determine their future through the democratic method of a fair and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices. The Joint Session passed The Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2022. The Joint Sitting has been adjourned to meet again on Monday at 4.pm.

Opening media brief of Multinational Exercise Aman 2023 held

Islamabad, February 08, 2023 (PPI-OT):Media brief of multinational Maritime Exercise AMAN-23 was held at PNS JAUHAR. Commander Pakistan Fleet Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami briefed media regarding Exercise details. Pakistan Navy has been conducting AMAN series of multinational maritime exercise every two years since its beginning in 2007. Eighth edition of the exercise is scheduled to be held this year from 10-14 February, involving participation of over 50 countries with ships, aircrafts, Special Ops Forces/ EOD Marines teams and observers.

The exercise is divided into two phases: harbour and sea. Harbour phase involves activities such as seminars, operational discussions, professional demonstrations, international get together and pre-sail planning of evolutions at sea. The sea phase would include tactical manoeuvres, exercises related to maritime security such as anti-piracy and counter terrorism, search and rescue, gunnery firings and air defence exercises.

Highlight of the sea phase will be the International Fleet Review, which will be witnessed by national and foreign dignitaries as a maritime nation, Pakistan has substantial stakes in keeping our seas safe and secure. Our interests are based on three major factors. Firstly, our extraordinary dependence on the seas for trade; secondly, operationalization of CPEC project and thirdly, our strategic location astride the global energy highway.

Cumulatively, these realities make maritime stability a vital national security interest. We realize the importance of maritime security not only for Pakistan but for all other countries whose prosperity and progress are tied to the seas. While we talk of security and stability at sea, let us be mindful of the threats and challenges that we face in the maritime domain, ranging from piracy, terrorism, Narco-arms trafficking to climate change. However, vastness of the seas makes it extremely difficult for any one nation to deal with these diverse challenges alone.

This calls for collective effort to make sure the seas remain safe and secure for all of us to use and benefit from. Pakistan Navy is therefore a firm believer in the concept of Collaborative Maritime Security and has been actively participating in Maritime Security and Counter Piracy Operations along with other partner navies since 2004.

Furthermore, since 2018, Pakistan Navy is undertaking Regional Maritime Security Patrols through which our ships maintain presence in vital sea areas in the Indian Ocean Region, to contribute towards maintaining good order at sea in accordance with our international commitments.

Exercise AMAN is thus the manifestation of this acknowledged reality of combating the maritime threats collectively through cooperation and mutual support and provides enormous opportunities to the participants for shaping and rehearsing the contours of such a collective response.

Commander Pakistan Fleet emphasized that the principle purpose of this exercise is to provide a forum for understanding each other’s maritime concepts and operational cultures, enhancing interoperability as well as identifying ways and means to combat common threats at sea. The occasion also helps foster friendships, bridging gaps and making it possible for countries from far and wide to operate together in pursuance of shared objectives.

He added that coverage of this event by the media would help project the true spirit of Exercise AMAN as reflected so aptly in its motto ‘Together for Peace’ besides the contributions of Pakistan Navy and Pakistan’s image as a responsible maritime nation.
