Dense fog blankets Punjab, disrupts traffic

Dense fog enveloped several cities in Punjab on the night between Sunday and Monday, paralyzing routine life and disrupting road traffic.

A spokesperson for the Motorway Police said several motorways were closed due to low visibility, including M2 from Lahore to Kot Momin, M3 from Lahore to Abdul Hakim, M5 from Sher Shah to Zahir Pir, and M11 from Lahore to Sialkot.

The Motorway Police advised motorists to use the Grand Trunk (GT) Road for travel and urged drivers to reduce speed and turn on fog lights. They also recommended that people stay home and avoid unnecessary travel.

Foggy conditions have caused traffic disruptions on national highways across the country, affecting the flow of vehicles in various areas.

Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, often experiences dense fog during the winter months, particularly from December to February. This weather phenomenon is caused by a combination of cold temperatures, high humidity, and calm winds, which lead to low visibility and can severely affect transportation and daily activities.

In recent years, the frequency and intensity of fog in Punjab have raised concerns about road safety, prompting authorities to take preventive measures, such as closing motorways and issuing travel advisories. The Motorway Police play a crucial role in managing traffic during these periods, ensuring that motorists are informed and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents.

Dense fog not only disrupts road traffic but also affects air travel and can have economic implications due to delays in the transport of goods and services.
