EU Ambassador Assesses Impact of Aid in Flood-Stricken Dadu, Highlights Ongoing European Support

Dr. Riina Kionka, the European Union Ambassador to Pakistan, led a delegation to Dadu, Sindh, to observe the progress of EU-funded relief and resilience projects aimed at aiding communities devastated by the 2022 floods. The visit included assessments of initiatives supporting climate resilience, sanitation, livelihood recovery, and child protection. According to United Nations World Food Programme, the delegation toured four villages where the EU, through partnerships with the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and Save the Children International (SCI) Pakistan, is implementing projects to aid recovery and strengthen community resilience. These initiatives include cash assistance distribution, construction of rainwater harvesting systems, and vocational training centers offering skills such as embroidery and tailoring. Ambassador Kionka and her team met with local women entrepreneurs and members of women-led village development committees who have begun to revive thei
r economies through small businesses. The delegation also reviewed UNICEF’s efforts in rehabilitating schools and providing essential services like safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, particularly for girls. Further visits were made to Child-friendly Spaces and Climate-Resilient Housing projects overseen by SCI Pakistan, where discussions with beneficiaries underscored the tangible benefits of these efforts. The ambassador expressed satisfaction with the EU’s significant role in supporting the affected communities and emphasized the necessity for continued aid in light of the ongoing threat posed by climate change. The projects across Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, funded by the EU with EUR 12 million, aim to directly benefit 22,365 households. Overall, the EU and its member states have provided substantial financial support for Pakistan’s flood recovery, totaling EUR 916 million in grants and subsidized loans, alongside additional aid in kind.
