Govt move for trade deal with Iran welcomed

Islamabad, August 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):Former President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) Dr. Shahid Rasheed Butt on Wednesday said the government’s efforts to conclude a trade agreement with Iran is a move in the right direction. The business community unconditionally supports the move of the government to sign a trade deal with Iran, he said.

Shahid Rasheed Butt said that apart from Iran, trade should also be initiated with other neighbouring countries, which is necessary to secure the economic future of Pakistan. He said that Pakistan’s trade with neighbouring countries is negligible, due to which the people are falling into poverty. Political tensions with neighbouring countries are not ending, which can only be tackled through enhanced trade relations.

The business leader said that trade between Russia and Western countries was not stopped even at the height of the Cold War, and despite the recent conflict in Ukraine, this process continues. Therefore, Pakistan should also trade with all the countries without compromising its principled stance on various issues.

Development of the SAARC region has been stalled because of political tension, with the main role being the tensions between Pakistan and India, he observed. Pakistan cannot develop without good relations with the neighbouring countries, otherwise, it would have happened in seventy years.

Trade between China and Iran which is 30 billion dollars will jump to 60 billion dollars after a nuclear deal, Iran and Turkiye have planned to triple bilateral trade to 30 billion dollars while China is importing 25 percent of its oil from Iran but Pak-Iran trade is below half a billion dollars which should be increased. The government should seriously implement the plan to import cheap gas from Iran to trigger economic activities across Pakistan, he demanded.
