Kargil, November 14, 2021 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, prominent leaders from Kargil and Leh districts have announced a mass agitation to press for their four main demands, saying that the BJP-led Indian government’s non-serious attitude towards the issues and concerns of the people of Ladakh have prompted them to resort to this course.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Leh-based Apex body of People’s Movement for 6th Schedule jointly called for a general strike on Dec 6 followed by public rallies and mass contact programmes in both Kargil and Leh districts in March coinciding with improved weather conditions. Their main four demands of the people of Ladakh are full statehood, constitutional safeguards for the region, one more Lok Sabha seat and two Rajya Sabha seats and a special recruitment drive for the local youth to fill up over 10,000 vacancies in Ladakh.

Announcing the programme at a joint press conference after the 3rd round of talks between the two powerful bodies of Ladakh region, co-chairman of KDA, Asgar Ali Karbalai and chairman Apex body, Thupstan Chhewang said that the entire Ladakh region is united in support of the jointly chalked out 4-point agenda. They said that New Delhi’s non-seriousness to address the desire and demands of the people of Ladakh had prompted them to review their strategy and go for mass agitation.

They Ladakh leaders asked people to remain cautious as attempts are being made by the BJP to break their alliance and create confusion among the minds of the public, adding that they had no personal interests and their struggle was for the people of Ladakh and for their coming generations. They maintained that they would go from village to village and mobilise the public to defeat the designs of those working against the interests of the people.

Both the KDA and the Apex body are separate amalgams of socio-religious, political and youth organisations of Leh and Kargil districts and were formed after the August 5, 2019 development when Modi-led Indian govt illegally and unilaterally abrogated the special status of IIOJK and bifurcated it into union territories of J and K and Ladakh. The BJP Ladakh was also part of the Apex body but later distanced itself after it raised the demand for the full statehood.
