Haleem moves court for adequate police security

KARACHI: Leader of the Opposition in Provincial Assembly of Sindh Haleem Adil Sheikh on Wednesday approached the Sindh High Court regarding the non-provision of adequate police security.

Mr Sheikh filed a petition against the federal and Sindh governments for not providing security despite of grave threat to his life. He said that he is a law abiding citizen of Pakistan serving as an Opposition Leader in Sindh Assembly besides being considered as the forerunner leader of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

He said that being the Leader of Opposition and a citizen of Pakistan, he is entitled to the protection as provided by Chapter-I Part-II of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973. He states that the constitutional guarantees, inter alia, include, but are not limited to security of person as secured by Article 9 of the Constitution of the Pakistan, 1973, amongst other guarantees as provided by the Constitution of the Pakistan, 1973.

He said that he was raising the public issue and current government’s policies and corruption as a result, he was threats of dire consequences. He said being Leader of Opposition in order to discharge his duties, he have to travel across the province and country for welfare and well-being of the people at large and in year 2018, he also arranged a Kisan rally from Hyderabad to CM House, Karachi. The rally was confronted with unprecedented hindrances and lastly, the convoy was attacked just to sabotage the peaceful protest which was being raised against the poor agriculture policies of the government.

He said he had attended various party meetings and had mobilized the general public for their rights. As such he had travelled across the province. He said his convoy had also been attacked in Kunri, Ghotki, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad and Ubaro during public gathering.

He said he was facing the threats of dire consequences by the private persons, and was also been receiving threats from the workers from ruling political party and its member Provincial Assembly.

He said that on the letter of Additional Secretary, Provincial Assembly of Sindh police escort along with police mobile was provided when he had assumed the charge of the office of Leader of the Opposition but the same was withdrawn.

He said: “I had traveled to Lahore for some personal engagements. But, in the night hours, he was arrested in a most illegal manner, although he was set at liberty by the Lahore High Court and Court declared his arrest as illegal. He added he had submitted application for lodging FIR against ACE Officer who was involved in his illegal arrest.
