(Health): Educational institutions reopen in Sindh amid death of schoolgirl

Karachi:After a six-month closure due to Covid-19 pandemic, educational institutions reopened across Sindh province after compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). However, a ninth class girl died after falling from stairs in Karachi’s Ayesha Manzil area, creating a mourning atmosphere across the city.

In the first phase, schools started classes from 9th to 10th in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Larkana, Sukkur and Shaheed Benazirabad Divisions of Sindh province. The classes from six to eight will begin from September 21 while nursery to primary classes will start from September 28 after compliance with SOPs.

The colleges, higher education institutes and universities have also started reopening in phases after compliance with SOPs in accordance with the last week decision of the inter-provincial education ministers’ conference. Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) Karachi also opened today, while Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan, which has started classes online a month ago, is also reopening from 21 September.

Sadly, a ninth class school girl, Areeba, aged 14, died after falling from stairs in a private Happy Palace School in Ayesha Manzil in Federal B Area of Karachi. The school administration said that the girl fell from the stairs and died. The parents accused the school administration of being responsible for her death as the girl was shifted to a hospital very late and the school administration also did not inform them about the incident. They said that it was the fault of school administration.

According to school owner Asif Khan, Areeba suddenly fell while going up stairs. She was taken to a private hospital where doctors pronounced her dead. Provincial education minister Saeed Ghani taking notice of the incident has called the report of the incident from DG private schools Mansoob Siddique. The police have also started investigation into the incident.
