Increase in country’s cotton production, Sindh surpasses Punjab

In a significant development in Pakistan’s agricultural sector, Sindh has surpassed Punjab this season to become the country’s largest cotton-producing province.

This provincial shift comes as the country’s total cotton production has recorded an encouraging increase, reaching approximately 5.6 million bales, an improvement over last year.

This was revealed by Shahid Rasheed Butt, former president of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce, who described the increase in production as a positive result of the government’s encouragement of farmers.

Butt said that government initiatives such as awareness campaigns for cotton revival, promotion of early sowing, and better coordination between agricultural departments are restoring farmers’ confidence.

Cotton is crucial for Pakistan’s economy and export industry, with the livelihoods of millions of farmers, ginners, and textile industry workers dependent on it.

The improvement in production will not only strengthen the agricultural sector but will also ensure better availability of local raw material for the textile industry.

Preparations for early sowing of cotton for the upcoming season have started in various areas of Sindh and Punjab, indicating a renewed focus on this crop within the farming community.

He added that if the government continues to provide facilities, quality seeds, and agricultural guidance to farmers, cotton production could further improve in the coming years, strengthening the rural economy and boosting textile exports.
