Japan beat Pakistan 4-0 in Davis Cup World Group I tie

KARACHI:Japan defeated Pakistan 4-0 on the second day of the Davis Cup World Group I tie at the Aisam ul Haq Pavilion, Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad on Saturday.

On Friday, Japan took 2-0 lead after Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki put the visiting team 1-0 up beating Pakistan’s seasoned and top singles player Aqeel Khan by 6-3, 6-2 score. Pakistan’s best player in the history of the game, Aisam-ul- Haq Qureshi worked in the second game to level arrears but Japanese Kaichi Uchida didn’t let him and won the game 6-4, 7-6(4).

On Saturday, Pakistan tried to bounce back in the doubles match as Aisam and Aqeel took the first set 6-4. However, the Japanese pair of Mochizuki Shintaro and Shimabukuro Sho overpowered the hosts winning the next two sets by 6-4, 6-2 score to seal victory for Japan.

In the second dead rubber game of the day, Shimizu Yuta defeated Muzammil Murtaza 6-1, 6-1 in a one-sided affair, depriving the host team a consolatory win.

Other team members of the Pakistan Davis Cup team included Ahmed Chaudhry and Mohammad Shoaib.
