Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab met with the Mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng, during his ongoing visit to China, and discussed enhancing bilateral ties and cooperation between the two major port cities.
In the meeting characterized by mutual warmth, both leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in urban development, infrastructure, public transport, and environmental sustainability. The Shanghai Mayor shared insights into his city’s advanced transport network, underlining its global reputation as a model of urban planning and sustainable technology.
As part of the visit, Barrister Wahab toured the Shanghai Transportation Command Center, where he received a detailed briefing on the city’s mass transit system and traffic management powered by modern technology.
Recognizing the value of Shanghai’s urban model, Mayor Wahab expressed Karachi’s intention to adopt best practices from Shanghai to upgrade its infrastructure and public services. Both sides emphasized learning from each other’s experiences and fostering deeper municipal-level engagement.
The visit will also include meetings with Shanghai’s senior officials, technical experts, and visits to key municipal institutions, enabling Karachi’s leadership to observe first-hand the administrative frameworks and civic systems in place.
Mayor Gong Zheng underscored the importance of extending China-Pakistan economic collaboration to the municipal level and proposed joint initiatives in urban development and public welfare. He noted that sustained interaction between cities could reinforce the broader bilateral partnership.
Barrister Wahab reaffirmed Karachi’s commitment to achieving global urban standards and modernizing its governance through such international exchanges. He noted that these initiatives would not only strengthen Karachi-Shanghai ties but also support Karachi’s vision of becoming a smart and livable metropolis.
To mark the occasion, Mayor Gong Zheng presented a commemorative souvenir to Mayor Wahab, symbolizing the goodwill and aspirations for a stronger municipal partnership.
