LHC dismisses petition against Fawad Chaudhry’s arrest

LAHORE: Lahore High Court on Wednesday dismissed the petition against the arrest of Fawad Chaudhary and termed it not admissible.

LHC Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh heard the petition and told the petitioner’s lawyer that the FIR has been registered in Islamabad, so how can he cancel it? However, Justice Tariq said if the petitioner satisfied him as per the law, he will give the decision. The LHC judge added that the case before him is one of habeas corpus, while the FIR has been produced in the court, so now how can it be called habeas corpus?

On the other hand, Fawad Chaudhry’s lawyer said this application (petition) is admissible as the accused was in Lahore Services Hospital when the High Court ordered his production to the police. Earlier, IG Punjab and Additional Advocate General appeared in court and told the Justice that a case has been registered against Fawad in Islamabad’s Kohsar Police Station.

Additional Advocate General Jawad Yaqub also told the court that Islamabad Police came to Lahore and were present everywhere. While the IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar told the court that Fawad Chaudhary was not in the custody of Punjab Police and if he had known in time, would have produced the accused in court anyway. A copy of the permission to lodge an FIR against Fawad Chaudhary has been submitted to the court.

Police on Wednesday arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Fawad Chaudhry and his brother in different cases. The police in the early hours of today detained Fawad from his residence in Lahore. brother of PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry where he was leading a demonstration in Jhelum to protest against the arrest of his brother Fawad.

It is reported that Fawad was arrested in a case registered by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Umar Hameed at the Kohsar police station of the capital city. Later, PTI workers protested against the arrest of Fawad, setting tyres on fire and blocked the GT Road for traffic. Fawad Chaudhry’s brother Faraz Chaudhry and former MPA Chaudhry Zafar Iqbal were arrested during the protest in Jhelum.
