Islamabad, December 28, 2018 (PPI-OT): Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Ministry of Climate Change and Agha Khan Foundation was held in the Ministry of Climate Change here today. MoU was signed by Secretary Ministry of Climate Change Mr. Shahrukh Nusrat and CEO AKF-Pakistan Mr. Akhtar Iqbal. Adviser to Prime Minister for MoCC Malik Amin Aslam, Director General Environment Mr. Irfan Tariq, Syed Mahmood Nasir Inspector General Forest, Chairman AKF-Pak National Council Mr. Iqbal Walji, Director Rural Development, Civil Society and Habitat Mr. Irshad Khan Abbasi and General Manager AKRSP Mr. Muzaffar Ud Din witnessed the MoU signing at the occasion.

Purpose of the MoU was enhance and strengthen cooperation between Ministry of Climate Change and its allied sections/wings and line departments and Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan and its sister organizations based on the shared objective of sustainable socio-economic development and addressing the challenges of climate change in rural areas through promoting knowledge sharing, coordination, research, joint activities, capacity building, policy support and joint resource mobilization as well as creating important synergies and opportunities through closer relations.

Advisor to PM on Climate Change Mr. Malik Amin Aslam elaborating the details of MoU said that this MoU’s core objective is to assist and cooperate in the climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and policies, and further added that AKF previously undertook numerous development projects and our mutual cooperation will strengthen and enhance with each passing day. It is pertinent to mention that AKRSP has already entered in many provincial agreements and development projects with governments in KPK and Balochistan in the field of primary childhood health, education , rural development and in Gilgit Baltistan supported in tourism , hydro-electric projects by installing more than two hundred hydro-electric stations which provides electricity for household cooking and utilities.

Moreover in the recent past The Agha Khan Foundation joined hands with MoCC in 10 billion Tsunami Tree Plantation Drive and Clean Energy Development in the climate sensitive mountainous regions of Gilgit, Baltistan and Chitral. AKF chief executive officer Mr Akhtar Iqbal remarked that it gives me great pleasure to sign such an unprecedented agreement with the federal government and I am proud of it. He said that there are wide fields of cooperation between Agha Khan Foundation and Pakistan, and with mutual cooperation and understanding we will enhance our bilateral development projects in the field of forestry, energy, education, environmental protection, poverty alleviation and tourism.
