Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Canada, Muhammad Saleem, made an urgent appeal to the international community on Friday, calling for it to ensure justice and accountability regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and alleging that the region’s inhabitants are facing “relentless repression” under Indian administration.
Speaking at a Kashmir Solidarity Day event, the High Commissioner detailed accusations against India, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, communication blackouts, and forced demographic changes in what the mission refers to as Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJand K), according to official information today.
Mr Saleem reiterated his country’s principled position, stating that a peaceful and lasting resolution could only be achieved through the implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions and a free and fair plebiscite reflecting the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
The High Commissioner’s remarks were part of commemorative events organised by the Pakistan High Commission in Ottawa and its Consulates in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. The observances were held to express solidarity with what was described as the populace”s just struggle for the right to self-determination.
The gatherings, attended by members of the Pakistani community and supporters of the cause, featured the screening of documentaries and a pictorial exhibition. Special messages from Pakistan’s President, Prime Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister were also presented to the audience.
