Pakistan and Romania Ink Pact to Establish Key Maritime Trade Route

Pakistan and Romania today signed a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing a new maritime corridor between South Asia and Europe, a move expected to significantly enhance trade efficiency and create fresh economic opportunities.

The agreement was formalised in a virtual ceremony, with signatures from Rear Admiral (Retd) Shahid Ahmed, Chairman of the Karachi Port Trust, and Mihai Teodorescu, the General Manager of Romania”s Port of Constanta Administration.

High-level officials witnessed the signing, including the Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan, Dan Stoenescu, alongside representatives from the foreign affairs and transport ministries of both nations and the Pakistan Romania Business Council.

This understanding underscores a shared goal to improve maritime links between Karachi Port and the Port of Constanta, situated on the Black Sea, thereby streamlining trade flows between the two major regions.

The pact is anticipated to bolster Pakistan’s ambitions in developing its maritime sector and blue economy. Concurrently, it reinforces Romania’s strategic position as a primary logistical gateway into the European Union.

The improved connectivity between the two key ports is forecast to generate new avenues for bilateral commerce between Pakistan and Romania.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Dan Stoenescu articulated Romania”s aim to increase its exports to Pakistan. He noted this would strengthen his country”s economic footprint in Asia and contribute towards achieving more balanced trade.

The ambassador added that the Romania-Pakistan partnership would establish a forward-looking framework designed for sustainable economic cooperation between the two states.
