Pakistan Welcomes Supplemental Award by Court of Arbitration in Indus Waters Dispute

Pakistan has welcomed a Supplemental Award issued on June 27, 2025, by the Court of Arbitration in the ongoing dispute with India over the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects.

The Court reaffirmed its jurisdiction in the matter and declared its continued responsibility to advance the proceedings in a ‘timely, efficient, and fair manner,’ the Foreign Office said in a statement here on Monday.

The announcement comes in response to India’s recent unilateral move to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance – a move Pakistan has termed ‘illegal.’

Pakistan stated that the Court’s Supplemental Award reaffirms the validity and operational status of the Indus Waters Treaty and underscores that no party has the authority to unilaterally suspend or disregard its obligations under the agreement.

‘This Award vindicates Pakistan’s position that the Indus Waters Treaty remains binding, and India has no right to take unilateral action regarding it,’ Pakistan’s official statement read.

The government urged India to immediately resume the normal functioning of the treaty and to fulfill its obligations fully and faithfully.

The Supplemental Award is the latest development in a long-standing water-sharing dispute between the two countries, originally governed by the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty brokered by the World Bank.
