The success of the Reko Diq mining project will serve as a critical litmus test for future foreign investment in Pakistan, German Ambassador Ina Lepel stated during a high-level meeting on Tuesday focused on expanding bilateral ties in the country’s burgeoning natural resource sectors.
The dialogue, held at the Ministry of Energy, brought together the ambassador and Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik to explore deeper cooperation in mining, minerals, and energy. Political and Economic Counsellor Janine Rohwer was also in attendance.
Ambassador Lepel acknowledged Pakistan’s initiatives to attract international capital, observing a growing global interest in the nation’s resource potential. She identified the landmark Reko Diq venture as a pivotal indicator for prospective investors.
Highlighting avenues for technical collaboration, the ambassador pointed to a strong potential partnership between the Geological Survey of Pakistan and Germany’s Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). She also recalled Germany’s previous assistance in mapping geohazards within Pakistan.
Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik briefed the delegation on the government’s strategy to modernize the sector. ‘Our vision is clear: we are focused on promoting sustainable and mechanized mining practices,” he said. “The Reko Diq project is the torchbearer, setting a new benchmark for responsible, large-scale mining in Pakistan.’
He confirmed that the momentum generated by the recent Pakistan Mineral Summit would be sustained through the upcoming Pakistan Mineral Investment Forum, designed to showcase a wider array of opportunities to global investors.
Addressing the energy domain, the minister underscored Pakistan’s commitment to environmental sustainability. He noted that a comprehensive refinery upgradation program is underway to elevate fuel quality standards, a move that aligns with Germany’s emphasis on decarbonization policies.
“To enhance our energy security, Pakistan is focused on indigenizing fuel supplies,” the minister added. “For the first time in nearly two decades, we have successfully conducted a bidding round for offshore exploration blocks, marking a new era of investment in the upstream sector.’
Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to fortifying the Pakistan-Germany partnership, agreeing to advance joint efforts that could facilitate tangible investments and knowledge sharing between the two nations.
