ISLAMABAD: Administrator Karachi, Sindh government’s Spokesman and CM Advisor on Law Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday said that the second phase of local bodies elections in Sindh has been postponed by the Election Commission of Pakistan not by the Pakistan Peoples Party.
“Many candidates of PPP were elected unopposed. We are in favor of holding local elections immediately and this is what we had made clear to the Election Commission. Those who make baseless allegations will always cry,” the Administrator said this while addressing a news conference in the Sindh Assembly Committee Room in Karachi. PPP Member Sindh Assembly Sadia Javed and others were also present on the occasion.
Wahab said that on Wednesday evening everyone was informed through media that the second phase of LG Polls in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions had been postponed. “Some people accused that the Sindh government postponed the election. They should know that it is the ECP’s responsibility to conduct the election. The elections should be conducted as per the schedule. We have also submitted before the ECP and the court that the work of delimitations has also been done according to the law,” he added.
He said that all the parties had representation in the Select Committee of the Sindh Assembly. Wahab said that Ali Zaidi had tweeted that PPP did not find candidates in Hyderabad and due to which, the elections had been postponed.
“Out of the 160 Union Committees of Hyderabad, 157 People’s Party candidates are contesting and our three candidates got elected unopposed,” he added. Wahab said that in Punjab, PTI succeeded in 15 out of 20 seats and the elections were conducted by the same Election Commission.
“When you succeed, everything is fine, when you lose, everything is bad. Now the politics of accusations should end,” the administrator said. In response to a question, he said that the one who had the majority in the Punjab Assembly would elect its chief minister and the one who did not have the majority will sit in the opposition.
He said that the Supreme Court did not ask them to make a local bodies law, adding that they themselves wanted to make the KMC empowered. Taking a jibe at Jamaat-e-Islami, the Administrator said that it can only make propaganda but cannot win even a UC.
“If it (Jamaat-e-Islami) lose the election, then it will stage a sit-in. If they win, instead of working, they will cry for powers, he added. Wahab said that performance of local bodies has improved in recent rains and the water was drained out timely.
