Shortage of blood increases thalassaemia patient miseries

KARACHI:Patients Welfare Association (PWA), a Dow students charitable organization, has been facing acute shortage of blood and they appealed to the citizens to donate it to save thalassaemia children or patients with emergency blood needs.

Spokesperson, PWA, while talking to PPI, informed that PWA is a non-governmental, non-political organization run by the students of Dow Medical College (DMC) established at Dr K.M Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK).

The PWA voluntary blood bank is largest single outlet blood bank of Pakistan with around 200 blood bags dispatched while around 250 registered thalassaemia patients given blood transfusion and iron chelation therapy.

She said PWA blood bank had been facing shortage of blood and needed public help to replenish blood stock. She informed that PWA was launching door to door blood drive and people could register their names for blood donation.

When contacted, Director, Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA), Dr Dur-e-Naz Jamal, said there was no shortage of blood in Sindh as new blood bank had been established at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (SMBB) Institute of Trauma, Karachi to provide blood to needy patients. She said PWA could contact SBTA if any shortage.
