SMIU holds condolence meeting over Turkish quake deaths

KARACHI:Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) on Wednesday held a condolence meeting to show solidarity with people of Turkkiye due to its heavy human loss in the recent earthquake.

 

It was held at SMIU’s auditorium and was attended by Turkish Consul General in Karachi Cemal Sangu. Vice Chancellor SMIU Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, deans, chairpersons, faculty, staff members and students presented flowers in the respect of innocent persons who lost their lives in the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria. On this occasion, SMIU announced to donate one-day salary of its employees of 17 and above grades for Turkiye.

 

Cemal Sangu in his speech said he has short words to express his feelings and sentiments on deaths of many people, injuring of hundreds of thousands persons and destruction of large number of cities and villages in Turkiye. Sangu said we shall rebuild our country and shall overcome all difficulties which are emerged from the earthquake. “Although it is a most difficult time for our nation but we are resilient and determined to rebuild our country,” Sangu said.

 

Talking on relationship of Turkiye with Sindh Madressatul Islam University he said we have a very special bond with this institution due close relations of its founder Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi with Turkiye. He said a few weeks ago he had visited SMIU and had held a meeting with Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, where they had taken some decisions to work together in the area of education, but he had not imagined that he shall come soon to SMIU to attend a condolence meeting organized for his countrymen.

 

Mr. Cemal Sangu said on the very first day of the earthquake a large number of people of Pakistan had visited Turkish Consulate in Karachi and had shown their solidarity with us and expressed their deep grief for human loss in Turkiye. “We, our entire nation and government of Turkiye are thankful to people of Pakistan specially SMIU for extending their support towards us,” Turkish Consul General said and added that the emotional support of Pakistan’s people is our strength.

 

Dr Mujeeb Sahrai, Vice Chancellor SMIU, said the day of 6th February was a catastrophic one for Turkiye, and it will be remembered as a disastrous day in the world history due to heavy human loss of Turkish people in the earthquake. He said SMIU has deepest and strong links with Turkiye due as its founder Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi, who received titles of “Effendi,” and “Bey” from the Sultan of Turkey.

 

Dr Sahrai said world is changing rapidly due to the climate change. In Pakistan, earthquake of 2005 had caused a great human loss in the northern areas of Pakistan. Similarly, in the last year many parts of the country specially its province of Sindh had affected by disastrous rains and floods. He said that due to the climate change it is possible that we may face such natural disasters in future also, hence we have to reduce the threats posing the climate change.

 

Earlier, SMIU’s faculty member Wafa Mansoor Buriro on behalf of SMIU’s faculty expressed deep condolence with Turkish Consul General and people of Turkiye. He said we feel same pain which the people of Turkiye are feeling. In-charge director of Works and Services Mr. Shairan Najeeb and students of the university also expressed their solidarity with people of Turkiye through their speeches. A large number of faculty, deans, chairpersons, administrative staff and students attended the condolence meeting.
