Minister for National Food Security, Rana Tanveer Hussain, emphasized the urgent need to streamline fiscal duties and implement fundamental changes in the livestock sector to empower farmers and ensure economic prices for consumers.
Addressing a pre-budget consultative meeting held today in the capital, Mr. Hussain highlighted that the livestock sector accounts for approximately sixty percent of the nation’s agricultural sector. He stressed its significant potential contribution to national dietary needs and export revenue.
The minister suggested that reducing the existing tax framework could lead to a substantial increase in production and revenue within the industry. Specifically, he pointed out the scope for reducing the general sales tax imposed on milk.
Furthermore, various proposals are currently under consideration, including the initiation of pilot schemes for pasteurization and the establishment of dedicated centers for safe milk production. These measures aim to improve product quality and safety standards.
Mr. Hussain concluded by stating that elevating dairy standards and formalizing the sector would be among the major objectives for future policy interventions.
