Sudanese condemn attacks on civilians, provide immediate protection: Pakistan’s position in the Security Council

Pakistan has strongly condemned the attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on civilians in Sudan, highlighting the grave risk of widespread atrocities and calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, while addressing the UN Security Council, expressed grave concern over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Sudan, stressing that civilians have borne the brunt of the three-year conflict.

The representative denounced attacks on essential civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and markets, with the situation in El Obeid described as particularly alarming due to RSF military reinforcements and the potential for a ground offensive. The RSF”s history of severe abuses, including indiscriminate killings and ethnic violence, further compounds the crisis.

Ambassador Ahmad called for the RSF to immediately cease its offensive in El Obeid, adhere to international humanitarian law, and ensure civilian protection. He also voiced concerns over the increasing use of drones and advanced weaponry, which exacerbates civilian casualties and disrupts humanitarian efforts.

The ambassador underscored the necessity for unhindered humanitarian access across Sudan and condemned attacks on aid personnel and resources. He reaffirmed Pakistan”s stance on preserving Sudan”s sovereignty and unity, cautioning against actions that might weaken national institutions or encourage armed groups.

Emphasising the lack of a military solution to the conflict, Ambassador Ahmad stressed that Sudan”s stability is crucial for the security of both African and Arab regions. He urged the international community to view the restoration of peace in Sudan as a shared responsibility.

Pakistan continues to support efforts by the United Nations, African Union, and regional partners to end the conflict and promote Sudan”s return to peace and constitutional order. The Permanent Representative lauded the UN Secretary-General”s envoy”s efforts and advocated for ongoing engagement to ease tensions and promote a Sudanese-led political process.
