United States Ambassador Announces 15 million Rs. Project to Restore Karachi’s historic Nusserwanjee Building

Karachi, February 20, 2020 (PPI-OT):Karachi’s historic Nusserwanjee Building is set to get a new lease on life through a grant of 15 million Rupees (USD 100,000) from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP). U.S. Ambassador Paul Jones announced the rehabilitation project at a ceremony held at the Indus Valley School of Arts (IVS) which will collaborate with the non-profit Sindh Exploration and Adventure Society (SEAS) to restore the site.

“Together IVS, SEAS, and the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation will demonstrate that preservation of cultural sites goes beyond stones and mortar. It is an investment in building a stronger, more prosperous Pakistan. Preservation work strengthens communities, builds a sense of belonging, contributes to economic development, and educates future generations about the tremendous heritage of diversity and tolerance that has existed here for centuries,” said Ambassador Jones.

Ambassador Jones also noted the building would be used to educate artists and architects who will serve as instruments of positive change in Pakistan. This is the third AFCP grant in Sindh and the 23rd such award in Pakistan. Previous grants in Sindh include the restoration of the tombs of Sultan Ibrahim and Amir Sultan Muhammad at the Makli Hill necropolis in Thatta and Verun Dev temple.

Constructed in 1903, Nusserwanjee Building is a Kharadar landmark representative of historic downtown Karachi and is a reminder of Karachi’s pluralistic religious and cultural roots. It was saved from demolition in 1991 and relocated, stone by stone, to the IVS campus.

Since 2001, the United States has awarded more than $2.8 million in grants to preserve cultural sites in Pakistan, from Gandharan archaeological treasures and Mughal architectural heritage, to historic manuscripts, and architecturally significant Hindu monuments and Sufi shrines.

United States Universities engage thousands of Pakistani students as interest in U.S. Higher Education Rises

Karachi, February 11, 2020 (PPI-OT):Amid rising Pakistani interest in U.S. higher education, representatives from 13 U.S. universities met thousands of Pakistani students during visits to schools, universities, and college fairs in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi as part of EducationUSA’s 16th South Asia Tour. Representatives of top universities from around the United States shared valuable information about their institutions’ academic programs, campus life, financial aid options, and application procedures.

As noted in the Institute of International Education’s 2019 Open Doors report, Pakistan is among the world’s fastest growing emerging market places of origin for students in the United States. The thousands of academic programs, world-class institutions, and unmatched flexibility of U.S. higher education make the United States the world’s premier destination for university students.

“Nearly 8,000 Pakistanis study at universities and colleges across the United States,” said Minister Counsellor for Public Affairs Lisa Heller. “That is an increase of 5.6 percent over the previous year, and we want that number to continue to rise further. The U.S. government is very proud to support the South Asia Tour, which will help Pakistani students choose a U.S. university.”

“Each year, the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) looks forward to hosting the South Asia Tour and introducing U.S. universities to Pakistan’s brilliant student body,” said Rita Akhtar, Executive Director of USEFP. “This year, for the first time, we are providing visiting representatives a chance to connect with Pakistani alumni and admitted students of their institutions. We’ve learned over the years that the personal connections forged during face-to-face conversations with representatives encourage more Pakistani students to enroll in U.S. colleges and universities.”

EducationUSA Pakistan is the only free and official source for higher education in the United States and a part of the U.S. Department of State’s network of more than 425 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries. Pakistan’s EducationUSA team is made up exclusively of U.S. graduates, allowing advisers to share first hand experience with applicants. In Pakistan, EducationUSA is managed by USEFP, a bi-national commission established in 1950 by the Governments of Pakistan and the United States.

80 Students Graduate from United States-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water

Karachi, February 04, 2020 (PPI-OT): Future Pakistani engineers and technicians in water science received their degrees today during the graduation ceremony at the Center for Advanced Studies in Water, thanks to a program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID Mission Director Julie Koenen joined Minister for Mines and Mineral Development Mir Shabir Ali Bijarani in handing out degrees and medals to the graduating class at the convocation ceremony at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) in Jamshoro. These 80 Master’s and PhD graduates are among the students who also participated in exchange visits at the University of Utah in the United States under the program funded by USAID.

“We believe Pakistan needs its youth and entrepreneurs to focus on solving the country’s challenges,” Mission Director Koenen said. “Partnerships and collaboration between the private sector, academia, and government are the way forward. The young emerging innovators like the ones graduating today, need to lead Pakistan’s journey in this critical sector.” The provincial minister Bijarani expressed his appreciation for USAID support and thanked the people of the United States for supporting education and health projects in the province.

This program at Mehran University is one of the research centers the United States Government established in 2014 to support Pakistani universities under the U.S. Government’s $127 million program (PKR 17.75 billion). The program supported research for innovative solutions to Pakistan’s water, energy, and food security challenges. It also resulted in deeper U.S.-Pakistan ties: Mehran University and the University of Utah have signed a memorandum of understanding to continue the partnership for the next five years.

United States and the Sindh Government Open another State-of-the-Art School in Karachi

Karachi, February 03, 2020 (PPI-OT): Local students in Karachi will have a new school for their education this year thanks to an on-going partnership between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Sindh government. On Monday, USAID Mission Director Julie Koenen and Sindh Minister for Labour, Information and Archives, Saeed Ghani inaugurated the Yousuf Goth School in Gadap Town, Karachi. Starting in April, approximately 600 local students will study at this school and benefit from the modern classrooms and facilities.

“The partnership between the U.S. Government and Sindh has already resulted in improved quality of education in the province’s public schools,” Mission Director Koenen said. “The children in Sindh, who receive free education in state-of-the-art schools, will grow up to become the next generation of Pakistan’s engineers, doctors, teachers, and entrepreneurs.”

Minister Ghani expressed his appreciation for the U.S. Government’s strong support in modernizing education in Sindh and reiterated the province’s strong and ongoing partnership with USAID. Sindh Secretary of Education Sindh Ahsan Ali Mangi, as well as other officials from Sindh and the U.S. Government participated in the ceremony along with community leaders, teachers, students, and parents.
