U.S. Consul General Sebron “CB” Toney Hosts Family Members of U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt for Virtual Chat with Students of SBBWU

Peshawar, September 22, 2020 (PPI-OT): The day after the International Day of Peace observances, the granddaughter and the great granddaughter of former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt held an interactive virtual chat with the students of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women’s University (SBBWU) in Peshawar.

Ms. Anne Roosevelt and Ms. Tracy Roosevelt of the Roosevelt family spoke virtually to students gathered in the Eleanor Roosevelt Corner Peshawar (ERCP) housed at the women’s university.

The outgoing U.S. Consul General, Sebron “CB” Toney, his newly arrived successor, Greg Macris, and the Public Affairs Officer, Kahina Robinson, participated in the virtual conference. The Roosevelt family remains active around the world working to increase positive outcomes in areas such as education, law, business, health, and democracy.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Corner at SBBWU was named after one of the most influential First Ladies in U.S. history. Consul General CB Toney visited the Eleanor Roosevelt Corner earlier this year to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the ERCP.

The Vice Chancellor of SBBWU, Dr. Razia Sultana, thanked the participants and spoke about the only public sector women’s university in Peshawar and its partnership with ERCP. “It is a matter of privilege to be hosting an event to shed light on the life of the First Lady who advocated for the role of women in the workplace and played an instrumental role in the protection of human rights,” said Dr. Sultana on the occasion.

Welcoming Ms. Anne and Tracy Roosevelt, Consul General CB Toney said Mrs. Roosevelt was a well-known advocate of human rights, including civil rights, women’s equality, and democracy. CG Toney also spoke about the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and called on SBBWU students to follow in Justice Ginsburg’s footsteps.

Ms. Anne and Ms. Tracy spoke about the legacy of the President and Mrs. Roosevelt and what they are doing to preserve it. They noted that Mrs. Roosevelt became one of the most highly-regarded and well-respected First Ladies in the world.

Since its inception, the ERCP has helped tens of thousands of young women every year from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to take advantage of print, online, and multimedia resources, and to connect with U.S. experts.
