SMEs in North Karachi facing hardships due to harassment: NKATI

ISLAMABAD:President North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI) Faisal Moiz said Monday that although North Karachi was the biggest industrial zones of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) but unfortunately, all these SMEs, who play a major role in the economic development of the country, were facing a lot of hardships because of harassment and demand for bribe by the corrupt officials of Employees Old Age Benefit Institution (EOBI), Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI) and other government agencies.

“It is high time that these SMEs, who are dealing with 22 government agencies, must get relief. We have to raise a strong voice against this injustice and corruption so that the relevant Ministers could take notice and strictly deal with all the wrongdoings going on at SESSI and EOBI”, he added while speaking at a meeting during his visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

President KCCI M Shariq Vohra, Senior Vice President Saqib Goodluck, Vice President Shamsul Islam Khan, KCCI Managing Committee members and NKATI members attended the meeting.

President NKATI suggested that in order to minimize the grievances being faced by the industries and SMEs in North Karachi industrial area, the government must look into the possibility of introducing ‘One Window Facility’ as the businessmen and industrialists were fed up of dealing with so many agencies and cumbersome procedures.

Highlighting the achievements of NKATI, Faisal Moiz informed that under a Public-Private initiative between the Sindh Government and NKATI, the infrastructure of North Karachi industrial area has been drastically improved to such an extent that it was the only industrial zone of Karachi which easily sustained this year’s torrential rainfall and not a single inundating incident was reported from this particular area while all other areas of the city witnessed severe flooding and infrastructure damages.

President NKATI, while paying glowing tribute to Chairman BMG Siraj Kassam Teli for his dedicated efforts for the betterment of business community, assured that NKATI would stand shoulder to shoulder with KCCI and all the BMGIANs in their struggle for the rights of business and industrial community. “We fully support Siraj Teli who will always find us standing at the frontline to support his honest and sincere efforts being made for an improved business environment”, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, President KCCI Shariq Vohra assured full support and cooperation to NKATI in resolving the issues caused by numerous government agencies. “The problems being suffered by the industrialists and SMEs of North Karachi be brought to KCCI’s knowledge so that these could be taken up with the highest authorities with a request to resolve the same on top priority.”

He appreciated the dedicated efforts being made by NKATI which has emerged as a shining star by collaborating with the provincial government under a Public-Private initiative for improving the infrastructure of North Karachi industrial area.

“It is heartening to see that a sum of Rs570 million was disbursed by Sindh government to NKATI for infrastructure development of North Karachi Industrial Area which was effectively utilized. This Public-Private Partnership was a wonderful initiative which proved very successful and it can also be confirmed by touring North Karachi Industrial area where the infrastructure, cleanliness, roads and street lights etc. are in a much better condition as compared to other industrial areas of the city”, he said, adding that NKATI has set a fine example for other industrial town associations to emulate while the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah deserves to be appreciated for this exemplary public-private partnership”, he added.

He stressed that all industrial town associations must unite under KCCI’s umbrella and maintain close liaison with the Chamber which was the most influential platform for resolving the general issues being faced by the business and industrial community. “Staying fragmented would never yield results hence, we have to make collective efforts under KCCI’s platform so that the government could be compelled to resolve infrastructure, electricity, gas, water and other civic issues being suffered by Karachi since long, besides devising those policies in consultation with all stakeholders which create a win-win situation for everyone”, he added.

NKATI lauds decision for cut in electricity tariff for industries

Karachi:Faisal Moiz Khan, President North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI), has lauded cut in electricity tariff for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and industries, saying that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s decision would definitely reduce production cost. However, it is also important to reduce gas and water tariff, which will not only boost the country’s exports but also help deal with the dire economic situation due to COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, NKATI president said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced 50pc cut on additional electricity usage for SMEs, while industries would be provided 25pc relief on additional usage of electricity from 1st November 2020. The industries would be provided electricity at off-peak hours’ rate for 24 hours for next three years.

Faisal Moiz Khan said that one of the major reasons for the increase in production cost are higher tariffs of electricity, gas and water. However, relief package for SMEs and industries would reduce production cost and enable exporters to compete in global markets. SMEs are back bone of economy of every country, we request PM Imran khan to promote and give more facility to SMEs like this.

“In a recent meeting of industrialists with Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad, he had requested for reduction in taxes as well as appropriate cut in utility charges to provide relief to SMEs and industries. Prime Minister Imran Khan fulfilled the promise made to the industrialists by announcing cut in electricity tariff which is hailed by the entire industrial community”, Faisal Moiz mentioned.

He further added that the country was once again witnessing an increase in the severity of the coronavirus epidemic. Only by providing relief to industries in such a situation can the economy be saved from the effects of the Corona epidemic.

He stated that Prime Minister’s package would boost the industries in the country as well as create vast employment opportunities and would also enable the declining exports of Pakistan to increase again which would stabilize the economy.

“For the first time in the history, SMEs and industries have been given such a big package in the form of cut in electricity tariffs which is the vision of the PTI government. Prime Minister Imran Khan wants to bring an economic revolution in the country. In this context, it is a big step”, NKATI president opined.

Faisal Moiz Khan added that reduction in production cost was essential for the growth of industries in the country. However, high gas tariff is also a major reason for the increase in production costs, so also cut in gas and water tariffs, could boost industries on a large scale and bring about a major economic revolution in the country.

NKATI rejects sudden rise in power tariff, withdrawal demanded

Karachi, October 27, 2020 (PPI-OT):Faisal Moiz Khan, President North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI), has expressed deep concern over the sudden rise in electricity tariffs and rejected the tariff hike by K-Electric, demanded immediate withdrawal and asks to send electricity bills to the industries at the previous rates.

In a statement, Faisal Moiz Khan said that K-Electric has increased the electricity tariff by Rs2.87 per unit without any prior notice and electricity bills are being sent to the industries as per the increased rates which has caused a wave of concern among the industrialists. “Further increase in electricity tariff will lead to a sharp rise in the cost of industrial production and will make exporters unable to compete in international markets, which could lead to a decline in domestic exports”, he pointed out.

He further said that industrialists and stakeholders including NKATI must be taken into confidence before increasing the KE electricity tariff and exchange actual reasons for the increasing tariff so that the industrial community can set an estimate of the cost of production. “The cost of production is determined by including KE and other utility charges, so the sudden increase in the tariff will definitely cause financial losses to the manufacturers”, NKATI president added.

Reiterating his demand for withdrawal of increase in power tariff, Faisal Moiz Khan said that the COVID-19 pandemic has badly affected the economy of the world including Pakistan and most of the countries have provided relief to the industries to sustain and stabilize the economy. On the contrary, measures are being taken in Pakistan to increase the cost of production by making the basic needs of industry extremely expensive, which is beyond comprehension, he pointed out. Faisal Moiz Khan further said that if the government wants to see the country economically stable, it should provide relief to the industries otherwise it will have a very negative impact on the country economy.
