Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah emphasized the importance of thalassemia awareness on World Thalassemia Day. He highlighted that thalassemia is a hereditary disease affecting entire families and encouraged the public to donate blood to help those with the condition.
The Chief Minister underlined the need for public awareness to prevent thalassemia, stating that safeguarding the younger generation is a priority for the Sindh government. He reiterated the government’s dedication to comprehensive health sector reforms.
Modern medical facilities are being made available for thalassemia treatment, Shah noted. He reported that, according to the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority, 9,525 patients, mainly children, are registered at 26 centers.
The Sindh government has established free diagnostic desks for thalassemia and hepatitis at two NADRA centers in Korangi and Saforan. Shah also spoke about ongoing efforts to encourage pre-marital screening and the spread of information through awareness campaigns, educational institutions, media, and community programs.
Syed Murad Ali Shah stressed the need for more effective thalassemia prevention measures. He suggested that a premier screening program could reduce the disease’s prevalence and emphasized the crucial roles of parents, teachers, and religious scholars in fighting thalassemia.
The Chief Minister concluded by announcing plans to enhance awareness campaigns against thalassemia, aiming for increased community engagement and education.
