A significant commitment has been made by the United Nations to aid Pakistan during its ongoing flood crisis, as the country prepares for the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC) in Islamabad. On Tuesday, Ms. Mishbah Khar, serving as the Ambassador for the ISC and Advisor to the Chairman Senate, engaged in discussions with Mr. Mohamed Yahya, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, to brief him on the upcoming conference slated for November 11-12.
During the meeting, Ms. Khar, along with Senior Director General Protocol Mr. Tariq Bin Waheed, extended formal invitations to legislative leaders, emphasizing the conference’s role as a unique forum for regional lawmakers to exchange perspectives, foster collaboration, and solidify partnerships. The event aims to bolster multilateral cooperation and constructive dialogue among stakeholders, tackling shared challenges and strengthening institutional connections.
In addition to conference discussions, Ms. Khar voiced deep concerns regarding the humanitarian and economic turmoil inflicted by recent severe weather conditions in Pakistan. She urged the UN to amplify its relief and recovery operations, stating, “Pakistan is currently grappling with severe flood conditions, and this is the moment for the UN to step forward and support vulnerable communities.” Mr. Yahya acknowledged the dire situation and expressed gratitude for the briefing and invitation, assuring that the United Nations would provide comprehensive support and active involvement in the upcoming ISC.
