Unpaid pensioner jumps from building’s third floor

LAHORE:The sky-rocketing inflation in the country is driving people nuts as a poor railways pensioner who has not been given his GP fund for the last six months tried to commit suicide in Lahore on Tuesday.

The tragic attempt by an elderly citizen raises a question mark on government’s salaries and pension system as many poor souls in this age of rising inflation find it hard to get two square meals a day. And in the absence of any kind of income, they are left with no other option but to take extreme steps.

One such example of helplessness was seen today when a dejected elderly pensioner jumped from the third floor of Railways Headquarters in Lahore. The poor man was not given his GP fund for the last 6 months. He went to the railways officers who were sitting on his file but the officers were not paying heed to him.

The railways is currently facing a financial crunch and many of its retired employees are not receiving pensions on time. Sources said that the poor pensioner came to the Railways HQ in connection with his file. But after getting no response from authorities, the depressed man jumped from the upper floor of the building. He broke his legs in the fall and was shifted to Services Hospital in serious condition.
