UP has highest number of crimes against women 

New Delhi, August 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):As many as 428,278 cases of crime against women were registered across India in 2021, reveals the latest compilation by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Uttar Pradesh tops the list with a maximum of 56,083 cases, followed by Rajasthan where as many as 40,738 cases were registered. Maharashtra and West Bengal stand in third and fourth position with 39,526 and 35,884 cases, respectively, of crime against women last year.

Nagaland reported the least number of crimes against women, with 54. It was followed by Sikkim (130), Mizoram (176) and Goa (224).

31.8% of crimes against women were cases registered under ‘cruelty by husband or his relatives’, 20.8% of cases were under ‘assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty’, while kidnapping and abduction accounted for 17.6% of cases and rape cases for 7.4%.

The crime rate (one case registered per one lakh women population) was 64.5 in 2021, compared to 56.5 in 2020. Among states, Assam had the highest crime rate (168.3), followed by Odisha (137.8), Haryana (119.7) and Rajasthan (105.4).
