World Hepatitis Day: Pakistan second largest in Asia in hepatitis cases

LARKANA: Principal, Chandka Medical College (CMC) Prof Dr Zamir Hussain Soomro said Thursday that it was matter of great concern that Pakistan is ranked the second largest country in Asia with regard to the growing hepatitis cases, where according to an estimate, there are 12.5 million hepatitis patients.

This he said while addressing a seminar at Chandka Medical College Hall, which was organized to mark the World Hepatitis Day. The seminar was arranged by the Department of Gastrology and Hepatology of the CMC. The doctors also took out an awareness rally in the college before the seminar which was also participated by a large number of medics.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Ali Haider Baloch said there are around 250 million hepatitis patients in the world today and according to research, it is being said that by 2030 nearly 20 million patients will die of this deadly disease in the world.

He said in Pakistan, there is an increase of nearly two lac people with hepatitis annually which is not only alarming but also extremely worrisome for which the relevant government authorities will have to evolve a foolproof strategy. Addressing the seminar, vice chancellor, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Prof. Dr. Aneela Attaur Rahman said that our university is a medical institution which should also give awareness about health.

She said that hepatitis is a contagious disease. She said that major causes of spreading of Hepatitis from one to another person include quacks who are working everywhere without any proper and constant check, lack of proper clean drinking water, hairdressers who fail to take needy preventive steps, usage of same syringe on many people, unscreened blood and so many other unlawful things which need to be curbed with iron hands of law forthwith to save the mankind.
