President Asif Ali Zardari today issued a strong call for a concerted national effort to remove barriers and strengthen accessibility, urging all sectors of society to foster a culture of inclusion for persons with visual impairment.
In a message commemorating World Braille Day, the President reaffirmed Pakistan”s resolve to uphold the dignity and rights of visually impaired citizens, ensuring their full participation in national life. The day marks the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, whose tactile literacy system was described as a lasting symbol of independence and equal opportunity.
President Zardari highlighted that providing accessible education and inclusive public services is both a constitutional responsibility and a moral duty, rooted in the nation”s founding principles of equality and social justice. He stated that the country’s progress depends on every citizen”s ability to contribute meaningfully.
The statement outlined Pakistan”s commitment to promoting Braille literacy, developing inclusive curricula, and utilising assistive and digital technologies to expand access to information. A key focus was placed on integrating accessibility standards across public buildings, government services, and digital platforms to prevent civic exclusion.
The President also confirmed Pakistan”s continued adherence to its international obligations, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Sustainable Development Goals, which advocate for equitable societies.
A tribute was paid to the resilience and determination of individuals with visual impairment. The message also acknowledged the vital role of educators, parents, caregivers, and organisations working tirelessly to advance Braille education and social inclusion throughout the country.
Concluding his message, President Zardari called upon federal and provincial governments, institutions, civil society, and the private sector to collaborate in creating a Pakistan where every individual is empowered to realise their full potential.
