Healthy minds always produce healthy society: SMBBMU VC

LARKANA: Healthy minds always produce healthy society and psychology is a very important department but it has been neglected here.

This was stated by Vice Chancellor, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Larkana, while addressing as a seminar held to discuss the importance of Sindh Mental Health Act 2015 here on Thursday. He said due to this Act, we will be able to consider people suffering from psychological disorders as equal patients. Prof: Badaruddin Junejo, Chairman Department of Psychology, said that the purpose of today’s program is to tell the relatives of the affected patients that they can also be treated and then they will also be able to play their active role in building the healthy society.

He said those who are trying to commit suicides should be brought to the psychology doctors for proper treatment instead of sending them behind bars. Superintendent of Police, Babar Javed, said that the people suffering from mental disorders are also human beings and according to human rights they also deserve proper treatment instead of fastening him with chains. He said he will try to post one mental health specialist at each police station. Dr. Ali Gul Tunio said that increase of crime and suicides in the society is due to mental diseases among the youth.

He said such people deserve equal treatment as is meted out with a healthy person. He said psycho patients deserve sympathies not angers. Former Senator Dr. Karim Khawaja said that if mind is healthy then body will also become healthy. He said usually deadly diseases are born from mental diseases and it is the mind which has made us Ashraful Makhlooqat. He said Sindh is the founder province of Mental Health Act in Pakistan which was passed by Sindh Assembly in 2015 and should be implemented in letter and spirit. The moot was largely attended by professors, doctors, students and civil society members.
