KARACHI:Sindh Government Children Hospital North Nazimabad Karachi run by Poverty Eradication Initiative has established Psychiatry Ward and introduced its OPD to deal with the psychiatric problems and diseases of children.
The SGCH has become first public sector in province of Sindh who started the facility both outdoor and indoor for the mental health disorder. As the population of under 18 years about the 30% of whole population and out of which about 7 to 10% children under 12 year may have some mental health disorder. As mental health problem is often less visible then physical ill health so its signifyingly less resourced then physical health care.
So, keeping in view the Poverty Eradication Initiative has opened the department to treat the children with mental health disorder in this hospital. Initially it is 4 bedded indoor facility, as in children the mental health disorder needs to treat by psychotherapy then the used of medicine so usually lees the 2 % of children with mental disorder required admission.
For the management of such patient poverty radication initiative has hired the full-time consultant holding the major diploma FCPS in psychiatry and also psychologist. Number of beds may be increased in future if required.
