Sole paediatric MRI machine for children not functioning at NICH

KARACHI: Children’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine at National Institute of Child Health (NICH) is lying out of order since three months and administration is unable to get machine repair, sources at NICH told PPI on Thursday.

The MRI machine is used to help diagnose a wide range of conditions in children due to injury, illness or congenital abnormalities. The administration charges Rs 1,000 per child for variety of brain condition and abnormalities, condition of spinal cord and other certain chronic disease. But after developing fault in sole paediatric MRI machine, parents of children have been compelled to pay heavy fees of private laboratories.

The paediatric patients with variety of conditions within the brain, chest, abdomen, and other chronic diseases are being referred to private laboratories since last three months.

Director, National Institute of Child Health, Prof Syed Jamal Raza was not available for comments.
