Industries Minister Orders Reversal of Urea Price Hike to Aid Farmers

In response to concerns over a recent urea price increase, Federal Minister for Industry and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain has directed fertilizer companies to immediately rescind the hike, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting farmers. According to Press Information Department, during an emergency meeting with leaders from major fertilizer companies like Fauji Fertilizer, Engro Fertilizer, and Fatima Fertilizer, Minister Hussain firmly rejected their rationale for the price increase, which they attributed to unspecified production costs. He underscored the government’s priority to safeguard farmers’ interests, especially ahead of the crucial Kharif planting season. The companies have been given three days to roll back the increase, with the minister also announcing plans to import up to 500,000 metric tons of urea if necessary to meet domestic demand and prevent shortages. Additionally, he has instructed provincial authorities to combat hoarding and illegal profiteering practices. Minist
er Hussain stressed that any future price adjustments should involve consultations with all stakeholders and be justified by actual increases in production costs.
