Reko Diq Project a ‘Crucial Test Case’ for Future Foreign Investment, German Envoy Emphasizes

The success of the Reko Diq project stands as a pivotal test for attracting further international capital into Pakistan”s natural resources industry, according to Germany’s Ambassador, H.E. Ms. Ina Lepel. The ambassador’s remarks came during a meeting with Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, aimed at exploring enhanced bilateral cooperation.

According to official report today, during the discussions at the Ministry of Energy, which were also attended by Political and Economic Counsellor Ms. Janine Rohwer, Ambassador Lepel commended Pakistan’s efforts and acknowledged the rising global interest in the nation’s mineral wealth. “There is a lot of potential in Pakistan”s mining and natural resources sector,” she stated.

The German envoy identified specific opportunities for technical partnership, suggesting that the “Geological Survey of Pakistan and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) have significant potential for collaboration.” She also recalled Germany”s previous assistance in mapping geohazards within the country.

Responding to the ambassador, Federal Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik outlined the government”s strategic vision for modernizing the industry. “Our vision is clear: we are focused on promoting sustainable and mechanized mining practices,” the Minister said, positioning the Reko Diq initiative as “the torchbearer, setting a new benchmark for large-scale, responsible mining in Pakistan.”

Building on recent promotional efforts, Minister Malik announced plans for a larger “Pakistan Mineral Investment Forum” to showcase the extensive opportunities available to global investors.

The dialogue also covered the energy domain, where the Minister detailed a “comprehensive refinery upgradation program.” He noted that this initiative aligns with both domestic fuel quality requirements and Germany’s focus on decarbonization. “Both our countries can collaborate effectively on this front,” he added.

Mr. Malik also highlighted recent government achievements aimed at bolstering energy security through indigenous resources, citing the successful bidding round for offshore exploration blocks-the first in nearly two decades-as signaling a “new era of investment” in the upstream sector.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between Pakistan and Germany, agreeing to work together to facilitate tangible investments and knowledge sharing.
